Over 40 Women of Faith Denounce Rev. Mark Harris’ Sexist Sermon

Charlotte, N.C. —  Over 40 Charlotte women of faith have signed a moral declaration calling on Republican congressional candidate Rev. Mark Harris, a former pastor of Charlotte's First Baptist Church, to treat men and women equally.

In a 2013 sermon, Harris, who won the North Carolina 9th Congressional District's GOP primary, discusses "God's plan for biblical womanhood" and argues that society "created a culture and created an environment that have made it extremely difficult for any woman…to live out and fulfill God's design."

But in a statement released today, women of faith state, “We believe that men and women are equal in the eyes of God and ought to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and society. This fundamental equality is necessary for justice. Rev. Mark Harris’ 2013 sermon questioning whether a career was the ‘healthiest pursuit’ for women casts serious doubt on his commitment to these values. As he is running to represent all of us in the House of Representatives, we call on him to publicly commit to respectful, equal treatment of men and women.”
