National Faith Leader on Jan. 6 Hearings: “We must hold accountable the white Christian nationalists who perpetrated this attack on democracy”

Washington, DC –The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol opened a landmark series of public hearings on Thursday night.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, Founder in Residence, Faith in Public Life Action

“Last night at the first public hearing of the January 6 Select Committee, never-before-seen footage was released of the violent attack on our country at the U.S. Capitol. The final shot of the video revealed a person brandishing a Christian flag while storming the Capitol. This footage is a haunting reminder of the gravity of the threat our country faced that day and continues to face today. The white Christian nationalists who fueled the insurrection continue to threaten our communities and our freedoms through politically motivated violence, spreading fear and disinformation, and setting up barriers to voting.

The evidence is clear. President Trump and his allies launched a coordinated attack on our country in an attempt to usurp the will of the people and overturn the results of the 2020 election. Politicians who covered up the truth and lied about the attacks are complicit. They attempted to deny the inherent dignity of all people which grants us the freedom to choose our own leaders at the ballot box.

Now is the time for truth and accountability. Every person who planned, executed and who is trying to cover up this attack on our country and our democracy must be held accountable. We must condemn white Christian nationalism in every form and continue to work toward a truly multi-faith and multiracial democracy where elections are safe and fair and where everyone has the freedom to thrive.”
