Faith in Public Life Action Launches
“Faithful Resistance to Corporate Hypocrisy” Campaign
The corporate accountability campaign is targeting 18 companies across the country that pledged to end political donations to anti-democratic lawmakers but have broken that promise
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Faith in Public Life Action is launching the “Faithful Resistance to Corporate Hypocrisy” campaign, targeting corporations that give to lawmakers who undermine our country’s democracy. After the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building, Fortune 100 companies across the country pledged to stop donations to some key Members of Congress who voted not to certify the 2020 election and/or supported the insurrection efforts. However, three years later, many companies have reneged on these promises and continue supporting these bad actors.
“With just under 100 days until election day, it is critical to ensure that we are using every tool available to uphold pro-democracy practices and norms,” said Chief Strategy Officer Heather Cronk. “U.S. democracy is in a fragile place, and corporate actors spending political money to support anti-democratic lawmakers threaten our democracy. American democracy is supposed to be a government for the people, by the people – but corporations are encroaching on our rights by funding lawmakers who do not serve our interests or the interests of democracy.”
FPLA is targeting 18 companies across the country that went back on their commitments and have created “scores” for those corporations based on how long it took for them to go back on their promises, how much money they donated to anti-democratic lawmakers, and how many legislators received donations over $10,000. The companies targeted are:
-
Home Depot
-
UPS
-
Marathon Petroleum
-
Delta Air Lines
-
AFLAC
-
AT&T
-
Lockheed Martin
-
Boeing
-
Comcast
-
Raytheon
-
FedEx
-
Chevron
-
Walmart
-
ExxonMobil
-
Cigna
-
Verizon
-
Pfizer
“We must call business leaders to account for their corporate hypocrisy,” said Senior Director of Coalitions and Campaigns Dora Muhammad. “As the future of democracy in our country hangs in the balance, we cannot allow corporations to put their thumbs on the scale. A deeper corporate commitment to upholding our democratic infrastructure demands more than a temporary cessation of corporate spending and a performative disclosure of funds. Donations to these lawmakers must cease immediately for the rest of their careers if we want to protect the sanctity of the process of our electoral counts and certifications.”
