ME Faith Leaders Denounce Passage of Immoral Tax Plan

Portland, Maine -- The Republican Congress passed massive tax cuts for corporations and the richest 1% by penalizing struggling families and the middle class. The final text from the conference committee was released the Friday before the vote. The bill goes to President Trump who is expected to sign it very soon.

On Monday, December 18th, after holding a pray-in all day at Senator Susan Collins’ office, five faith leaders risked arrest after the Senator announced she planned to vote “yes” for the GOP tax plan. These faith leaders are part of a national effort to call for Congressional leaders to reject the GOP’s tax plan. To view a roundup of video, photos and links, click here.

Rev. Allen Ewing-Merrill, Maine Chapter Coordinator, Faith in Public Life:

“We are deeply disappointed in Senator Collins' decision to support this immoral tax bill that provides obscene tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and powerful corporations while setting the stage for huge cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Despite the tragic passage of this legislation, we will continue to raise our voices, even as our legislators ignore the cries of their constituents. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.’”

Rev. Tamara Torres-McGovern, United Church of Christ (UCC) pastor, Portland:

"By voting yes on this tax legislation, Senator Collins has cast a vote against the best interests of the majority of Mainers. We are already the most food insecure state in New England. Too often, we hear the stories of people struggling to afford the medications or health care they desperately need. We know, intimately, how disastrous this legislation will be for our state. Mainers don't need empty promises of trickle down prosperity. They need tangible social programs that will support them when the bottom falls out — programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security."
