National Faith Leader Celebrates President Biden’s Historic American Jobs Plan

Washington, D.C.-- Yesterday, President Joe Biden unveiled the American Jobs Plan to rebuild the nation's aging infrastructure, support electric vehicles and clean energy, boost access to caregivers and their pay, ban exclusionary zoning, invest in community-based violence reduction programs and much more.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life Action:

“As a pastor, I believe all of God’s children deserve to live in communities where they can thrive. The Biden administration’s American Jobs Plan is a strong start toward honoring this principle. When we create jobs that pay living wages, lay the foundation for healthy communities, and invest in our public resources with an eye toward equity and justice for all, we are treating our neighbors with dignity.

Congress and the administration have an opportunity to deliver big for our communities in this plan. We will mobilize faith communities across the nation to urge President Biden and Congress to include a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented essential workers in this package.

Throughout history, public investments have excluded people of color, but this plan names racial equity as a priority in transportation and climate change investments. People of faith understand that a just future involves remedying the injustices of the past. We will work together to ensure that Congress carries forward this moral work with the American Jobs Plan.”

National Faith Leader Condemns Police Killings, Calls To Defund the Police and Pass BREATHE Act

Washington, D.C. -- Officials in Chicago released body camera footage on Thursday of a police officer fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy, Adam Toledo. This comes less than a week after a police officer fatally shot Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minn., about 10 miles from where Derek Chauvin is on trial for killing George Floyd. Other police shootings of Black men have also occurred throughout the country over the past few weeks in Washington, D.C. and Columbus, OH.

Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO of Faith in Public Life Action:

“Our nation has yet to uphold the principle of equal protection and equal dignity for all of God’s children. The police are rampantly stealing the lives of Black and Brown people all across the nation. These murders will not stop until we defund the police. Adam Toledo and Daunte Wright were beloved children of God and they should still be here with their loved ones today.

We do not have to accept police brutality and police killings as a fact of everyday life. We must continue to fight against white supremacy and militarized policing until we bring about a day where our Black and Brown neighbors, friends and family can live safe in their communities and with the dignity they deserve.

Our elected leaders must pass the BREATHE Act. Black-led protests for equality have created a transformational, once-in-a-century moment of opportunity to enshrine equal protection in law. The BREATHE Act will divest taxpayer resources from policing and invest in new public resources that will make communities safer and equitable. People of faith have an important role to play, following the lead of those who have brought about this historic moment. We must see it through.”
